The Debate

Anyone else breathe a sigh of relief that both our main candidates for President can at least SPEAK? It made me realize that three of the past four elections have involved a Bush. OMG can we just be done with them already! We listened to the debate on NPR since we no longer have cable TV (thankfully we cancelled it last month--and ah, the peace and quiet in our home again!). It was interesting to just hear it and not see any of their mannerisms. I thought they both sounded good, but I was sad to hear Obama on the defensive more often. McCain is the pit bull, though, and we sure don't need any more of that and his warmongering. I'm still watching carefully to see what happens with the economic bailout. But at this point since I have to choose between the two, I'd definitely rather have Obama leading us through the coming hard times. And yes, I'm not willing to vote third-party at this point and take any chance the Republicans will get in. Sarah Palin being reason...

Thieves All of Them

I deleted my Obama widget today. He's for the bailout. I'm not. This is the biggest deal in our history. They are robbing us and our children blind! I don't know who I'm voting for anymore. I'm totally, completely disgusted. Write in Ron Paul ? Dennis Kucinich ? I'm going to see which of our Congress people are voting for the bailout, that's for sure. And then we'll throw them all out! Some are saying this "Paulson (Bush) plan" has been in the works for months. They were just waiting for the right moment to pounce. Did we know he meant something like this? Hell no! I bet n...

Using the Solar Cooker and Rice Pudding Recipe

On Sunday we used the solar cooker for the first time. It arrived on our doorstep a couple of weeks ago after months of being on back order. Yes, demand is that high, and the company ( Solar Oven Society based in Minneapolis ) is having a hard time getting the recycled plastic materials they use to make their SOS Solar Sport ovens . I like that these ovens are made in Minnesota and were designed with the help of our very own 3M engineers. I decided to buy one rather than make my own because they're so lightweight (less than 10 lbs.) and more dependable than a homemade version--though I know a lot of people are building their own with great success. See my sidebar under "Interesting and Inspiring" for a page of ideas. I also like that for every Solar Sport I buy, some of my money goes to providing Solar Sport Ovens to homemakers in Africa and other needy countries so that the women don't have to ruin their health cooking over an open fire in their tent or hut. Here...

The End of America?

Older folks have been telling me for years that our country is in jeopardy. By "years" I mean since 9/11/2001, since the Patriot Act and Guantanomo Bay and the Bush/Cheney power grab which continues big-time today (with the Paulson power grab of all U.S. finances--whatever your thoughts on the bank bailout necessary or not, as a freedom-loving American you surely can't support how much "sweeping new powers" the Executive branch of the govt. now wants--click on The Automatic Earth for one source of info. on this). I have to admit it's taken me years to get it, and to really know enough to care. It's been dawning on me lately that the reason the Federal Government's so-called "No Child Left Behind" education act focuses so strongly on reading and math to the detriment of all other subjects is that the government does not want our children to be learning about History, specifically American History, or Civics, or anything that might make them ...

Rose's Cat Photos

Rose took 107 photos of our cat on her little Polaroid pixie digital camera yesterday. Many of them turned out really cool. Here's a few: Cat surveys her territory Cat talks to the oak tree fairy (see it?) And last, cat on the run! We love our cat yes, but we thought you might like these for the photographic interest. Think Rose's got talent?
