13 February

From today's department of random:

I had a dream last night that my husband was a bigamist.  At first I supported it; it was a favor to a friend.  But after the fact, as the implications of it set in, I became distraught and felt suddenly that my life was ruined.  I think in this case the subconscious second wife symbolizes the real, nearly full-time second job George currently holds.  That job has been a blessing for the past couple of years, but it has run its course and thankfully soon will end.  As George and I sat at breakfast this morning, I said to him: "Whatever you do, do not take a second wife.  Or any more jobs!"  With a very weary "are you kidding me?" look he said I need not worry about that.  Thankfully, I'm not quite distraught over that job, not as much as I would be if he had another wife.  I just miss him.  A lot.

Random kitty pic.  She was curious about the meditation candle I lit this morning.  Don't be fooled that I do this every day, but today I needed the calm of staring at a candle for a bit.  Curiosity did not kill the cat, thankfully.

And here's my living room re-arranged (with random Billy pic).  The wing chairs are temporary, I hope, to be replaced by a leather (non pet-hair collecting) love seat or pair of chairs in the near future.  We recently received those tables from my mom and dad and I wanted to use them.  Can you tell they are from our family room in the 80s?  I really like them, and like how they modernize and streamline the space even though they are now nearly "vintage".  They are very good quality, as are the wing chairs.  You would not believe how much those chairs have been sat upon since the 1980s, and how firm and comfortable they still are.  Even the upholstery is *almost* back in style again and it is in surprisingly good condition.  I like wing chairs so they'll do for now, but I'd prefer something else for that space.

I know.  I have too many odd patterns in my living room right now.  Above is a picture of our closet office or "cloffice" I've found they're called.  I purchased the pillow at Target in the girls' room section, to "funk-ify" that old chair.  I'd like that old chair to be the most traditional thing in our living room, eventually.  I do like to mix traditional and modern.

Below is the love seat (with yet another pattern) I tried to move up to the living room as a temporary stand-in for a new love seat.  I tried to do this alone.  It's light enough and I'm just stubborn enough and...see first paragraph about tired, overworked husband...

But then this happened:

As I was trying unsuccessfully to get it up this staircase:

Oh well, the wing chairs will do for now.  And not ONE of those mason jars broke.  I just might move them away from the staircase though.

So things from the '80s are now 'vintage?' I thought I was still safe saying vintage was '30s or '40s. I feel old. I was happy (well, not exactly happy...but I wanted to see it) to see the picture of the broken window. Ouch! It's all looking good!

I like your living room space. I'm sure that it'll look lovely with the changes that you're thinking about, but I must say that it's an inviting and beautiful space as is. In the third photo, I have a chair nearly like that on the left, but not quite so fancy. It belonged to my great-grandmother and it is evident in some photos from 90 years ago. Yours must be nearly as old!

I think that the love seat would have looked cute in that space too, but... oh! The window! I'm glad that it didn't smash clean through.

Be safe, girl! :)

I like your living room -- didn't notice too many patterns at all. I'm all in favor of putting together things you like and if they don't match, so be it!

Lisa, I just looked through your blog which I only recently realized you had. I appreciate what you have to say here! You say many thoughtful things about being an introvert, being liberal, among many other things with which I resonate but am not very adept at articulating. Thanks! If I can figure out how to, I will sign up to follow you! By the way, do you have a twitter?

Homeschooling/Unschooling Almost A Year Now

The kids took their annual, required standardized achievement test yesterday. This is the law in Minnesota, homeschoolers have to take the test and keep it in the files at home but we don't have to turn it in to the district or anything, unless there's a problem. It seems reasonable to me. Yesterday's test went well. A friend of mine, a former teacher, does the testing as a business, so the kids are really comfortable with her. She sets up her "office" at the library and devotes about an hour to each kid, using the Peabody Individual Achievement Test . The categories in the Peabody test are General Information (science, social studies, art, etc.); Reading Recognition; Reading Comprehension; Mathematics; Spelling. There are 100 questions per category, though they don't start each child at number 1 but somewhere before/below where they should be at and work up from there. One of my kids , age 9, tests just at or above her grade level. This is great. A confirmat...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
