In A Fog

Sorry I haven't been around all week. I'm not ill, but I have been having mild sinus headaches all week and it puts me in a bit of a fog. I used to have terrible sinus trouble but have gotten much better over the last several years. The main thing that has helped with my sinuses has been seeing a chiropractor but I have been unable to see him for a while. I need to make an appointment. Also, giving up orange juice and peanut butter, especially orange juice, has helped a lot. Dairy doesn't bother me like it does some people, but my former, lifelong breakfast of peanut butter toast and orange juice sure does. At first that was painful as I loved that morning glass of o.j., but now it's been so many years I don't miss it at all.

Other reasons I'm in something of a fog have to do with the state of the world. I feel like I've placed a bubble around myself, protecting me from the horrible things going on right now. Japan, for which I can only offer up prayers. Budget cuts around the nation and world, threatening our state parks, public broadcasting, and public workers' salaries are really taking their toll on my psyche. I am brought to my knees, which is not such a bad thing. I find my ever-present help comes from my faith in God. And my friends and family.

Also, it seems, while I don't mind DOING a budget, I don't seem to want to write about it. There are a lot of good resources on the web for zero-based budgeting. The blog, Simple Mom, which is in my sidebar is an excellent one. You could do a search there for "zero-based budgeting". She explains it very well and with graphics.

I will get back to talking about our budget next week. Tonight George and I will talk about April's spending plan, getting his comments and final approval on what I have already written out on paper. Maybe there will be changes with some discussion, but I think I've got it down pretty well.

Have a good weekend.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota. Initially the police told the people on the bus to exit. When the people on the bus asked if they wer...
