Spring Break and All I Got Was Three Lousy Pictures...

Rose had time over break to put on some puppet shows for us.

Last week was spring break for George and Rose (does that make it "spring work" for me?). We had fun. We hardly did any of the spring cleaning that was our goal, but George did get some garden seeds started and I at least began to go through the piles of photos, art supplies, and other junk that has been stashed in the basement for a few years.

We went to Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria, Minnesota for one night. It's just over an hour north of us, and the hotel and waterpark were considerably cheaper there than in the Twin Cities. Above the kids are watching the TV and George is reading the newspaper. We don't go away to get away, we go away to watch cable TV, as you can see! I got in a little Food Network porn (don't ya just love Giada's kitchenware?--porn for women). The kids got to watch some cartoons, and George and Elijah watched "Warriors" on the History Channel.

And oh, the hot tub and water park were fun too. Didn't taken any pictures though.

Didn't take any pictures of the beautiful, sunny day in Minneapolis yesterday either. Just this shot of George, Rose and Elijah sitting in the cramped but historic seats of the Thrust Stage at the Guthrie Theater. They're waiting for the family production of Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona to begin. It was so fun. Director Joe Dowling chose to set the 1594 play in 1955, with 50s music and dancing to boot.

Now the kids have seen The Taming of the Shrew done in Harley biker style and Two Gentlemen of Verona in 1950s Bebop style.

For me it was just a treat to be back in the thrust stage theater, even in a new Guthrie. The other stages, while lovely, are just imposters...

It looks like you had a great time. We watched the Warriors thing as well- I was a little disappointed.
It's great that your children love Shakespeare. Mine haven't seen much live stage but they like Shakespeare plays.
I hope things are warming up for you with the approach of spring

We always end up gorging on TV when we're on vacation since we don't watch at home...good to know it's not just us :-)

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota.
