The Mighty River

While we're all praying for our neighbors to the north, in Moorhead, Minn. and Fargo, N. Dakota today, I thought I'd share some photos I took yesterday of the Mighty Mississippi right here in St. Cloud. We live just a 1/2 mile from the river, on very high banks so we don't worry about flooding at all, but it's amazing to go down and see the river so swollen and rushing right now. These are taken across the river from St. Cloud State University, and you can see there's a dam here where it's fascinating to watch all that water pouring over. Even many yards away I could feel the cold mist on my face. It's heartening to see all the people working hard in Fargo/Moorhead trying to keep those rivers at bay. Three rivers converge at that spot, and they've got their work cut out for them. As the river crests today at levels never before seen, keep the folks up there in your thoughts and prayers please! We're watching in Texas - hang in there, you guys! You could always send some water this way if you have too much. ;-)

That's some powerful stuff. Why did our previous generations ever think it was smart to build *that* close to such a powerful force?

(PS Your link doesn't show it's linked. I had to hover over every line in order to find it. lol)

It was bad enough here last summer, sandbagging in warm weather, I can't imagine them sandbagging in the snow. We crossed several rivers, including the Mississippi today and while the Big Muddy wasn't out of it's banks many others were. The Rock River in IL was amazing!
I just hope all turns out well for everyone there.

It's hard to comprehend who much water that is. When we crossed the Mississippi last August, it was just wide and flat (in Iowa). Sounds like they're working their hardest to prevent disaster up there, but I was reading that while the cold is helping reduce additional melting, it's making sandbags less effective. Must be hard going right now.

It's strange, I can see my link...wonder why you can't? It's in blue for me. Not sure how to fix that.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
