I Mentioned My Banjo

Well, a few months ago. And um, I've practiced exactly once since then. But it was a good practice! My shoulder gets sore, however. I guess if I practiced more often I might get over that.

Why, oh why, I keep asking myself did I choose, like, the hardest bluegrass instrument there is? The instrument in which the player plays four times as many notes as anyone else. (Did you know that? Yes, the reason the banjo sounds so cool is because banjo players are playing "roles" of four notes for every one melody note, instead of strumming single notes like most everyone else!)

I love my banjo. I really, really do. It's even American-made. A Deering Goodtime Banjo, the very best inexpensive banjo on the market. I love it with a passion. I even want someone to take my photograph with it. Just like the cool girls in this photo... But that feels too fake since I can hardly play a single tune on it. (The book in my photo at top is also the BEST beginner banjo book ever--take it from an expert like me, okay? It's Jack Hatfield's Bluegrass Banjo Methods for Beginners, Book One. I'm learning to play a mean, albeit slow, version of Good Night Ladies from it. Yes, that's the first song in the book, and I'm really not there yet.)

I also love that red suede strap I got for my banjo. The one that's supposed to help make my left shoulder not so sore. And I love that table runner my Grandma made, the one under the banjo and stuff.

With all that love, I really should start playing the thing more, eh?

By next summer, in time for the Minnesota Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Festival, I'm setting a goal to have played through at least my entire beginner banjo book. Okay? Will someone hold me accountable? (And no, dear husband, you don't count. Your musical ability just gets annoying in this case. I don't want to hear anything from you!)

I'm really looking forward to being able to play one of my favorite old-timey songs ever, Will The Circle Be Unbroken. It's in my book.

It's the same with my fiddle. I was doing well for a few weeks and then...nothing!

I need to set some sort of similar goal to help inspire me.

Love the banjo! Good luck with your lessons.

Ack! I want to learn the banjo! I've been craving--really, really, craving--a banjo and lessons to boot. My son took a year of "fiddle" from an incredible fiddle teacher and since then all I hear is banjo in everything. I wish you lots of luck and can't wait to hear how you progress. I am maxed out with homeschooling and all my other interests (knitting, baking, sewing) for now, but perhaps I will push a little harder towards my banjo goal, thanks to your post. Best of luck!

This is the EXACT same thing with my harmonica. I LOVE the harmonica and want to learn it but my LUNGS get sore. lol I've had it for more than a year and have only practiced a handful of times. :(

Oh I just love bluegrass. Maybe one of these days we'll both practice and then if we ever meet we can play together!

Arienne, that is so cool that you want to play banjo too! Do get a Deering Goodtime, unless you can find a good used one cheap or something. The Deering Goodtime has great sound for the $300-400.00 price tag. I guess it is hard to find a good sounding used banjo, according to my husband and other "experts". I hope you will do it!

Gina and Tara, I guess maybe if we did form a band we'd practice more! And have fun, too. Too bad we don't all live closer to each other.

Thanks for your kind suggestions--I just ordered a catalog from Deering. I have always wanted to play "Red Clay Halo", especially after hearing The Barbwire Cutters' version.

They say the only way to learn something new is practice , preactice, practice! I would try and find a short amount of time daily (I know, it's hard)and just try for like 15 minutes. You can do almost anything for 15 minutes (Flylady). You will begin to learn if you give it the time. Good luck, I think it is awesome that you are trying!

I have an Irish Tin whistle that I can play approximately two tunes on but I only just got it about four months ago and I will figure it out eventually.

I think that what you should give yourself credit for is that you are still trying to learn something. So many grown-ups in our society don't do that. I can't tell you how many times I have heard people grump, "I wish I learned to ...." but then they never do anything about it.

I think it is wonderful that you are learning a new skill and that you are making time for yourself.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family!
