Holy Crap It's 33 Below!

We hit a new record low last night, -33F. It's STILL -33 a 8:15 a.m., according to both Minnesota Public Radio and my Yahoo page. This is getting ridiculous; even the puppy refused to walk this morning!

It'll be another day stuck inside, but today we're going to do some painting and reorganizing in the basement. Photos later!

They're still saying we're going to get above zero today...we'll see.

When it gets that cold out, what happens? Do people cancel work or school because it's too darn cold to go outside? Do cars still start? It's 3 degrees here in Massachusetts, and I thought THAT was cold!!!

Robin, amazingly it's mostly business as usual. Most but not all cars do start (maybe we have hardier cars here in MN? Most people do have garages...), offices do open, stores too, etc. School is only cancelled when windchill is -45F. or worse. That's when it gets to be "flesh-freezing" in 10 minutes or less and it's just too dangerous for kids at the bus stops.

Temperature is all relative and this winter we are quite used to being below zero, but you know when the puppy doesn't want to walk it's more miserable than usual!

Wow, I hardly remember those days anymore.

I have friends that are from Florida (live in TX right now) that just went up to visit MN for the first time...this weekend! When they get back I will have to remind them that -33 is *not* normal!! They had this trip planned for a while and there was no turning back ;) I wonder what they will say when they get home...

We had -24 this morning. My brother is in Antarctica for 3 weeks doing research. I was talking with my Mom last night. My brother had to do an ice survival course when he got there and they had to sleep out on the ice with only survival gear. Of course it's summer there but the overnight low was 23 with a high of 40! It's warmer in Antarctica than it is in the upper midwest. It was also warmer in Barrow, AK this morning than it was here! This cold is just WRONG!!
I'm more than ready for spring.

I'm so, so sorry! Sending you warm, melting vibes!!

P.S. The only anon comments I get are from people without blogs. Does Blogger catch most spam? I think there is a spam filter you can add to Blogger code if it's needed.

Our lows are only in the teens right now, but with the fog I just feel colder. My husband rolls his eyes and gives me that "I lived in Montana and that ain't nothin' sister" smirk whenever I comment either on our temps or yours!

Trying to work out what that is in celcius. Still cold I think!

Wow, I feel for you guys up there. That kind of cold is all consuming.

In the west, we're having a warm spell. It's sunny and the highs are in the mid 30's. It's not quite enough to melt the snow that has overstayed its welcome.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota. Initially the police told the people on the bus to exit. When the people on the bus asked if they wer...
