Happy Birthday to My Mom!

I'm a terrible daughter. I always forget to send the card on time. I never forget the date, or the person, but getting a card in the mail ahead of time...ack! Never do it. (For that matter, in this regard I'm a terrible sister, granddaughter, niece, daughter-in-law, etc. Card sending escapes me in general, and I was raised better than that, yes.)So, this morning I can use my blog to send out the message, which won't be arriving on time in the mail today.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!

I love you! Thanks for being my mom!

Love, Lisa

I hope you're enjoying the heat in Arizona while we're sitting inside watching the snow and cold blow in...

Happy Birthday to your Mom! Hope she had a wonderful day.
If not sending cards makes a bad daughter, sister or friend, count me among the bad as well. I don't know what it is that keeps me from getting them out. I'm just not organized enough- by which I tend to think that it isn't a priority. I always remember to call or email but a card? not likely.

Happy Birthday mom!

I never send cards, but I do remember to call my parents on their birthdays. At this point, we seem to have come to the tacit agreement that we just need to acknowledge each other without too much hoopla.

I'm sure my mom loves all your birthday wishes, too! Yep, that's me with her. Don't you love the hairdos? I think she looked great!

I'm so glad the rest of you don't send cards either. We're a big card family, but they seem kind of pointless to me. I prefer a phone call!

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
