The Tree

We're just about ready for the neighbors tonight. The house is all put back together, the living room has been looking lovely in its blueness all week, the Christmas tree is up and decorated (finally! according to the kids), the Advent Wreath and the Nativity and George's Santa collection are out, and I've done my best to edit edit edit the decor down to the minimum while still maintaining that Christmas spirit. ("Remember, Rose, less is more" I'm always saying.)The booze has been purchased, many cookies have been baked, and get this, even my own bedroom has been cleaned! Fabric and sewing items are stowed in the cabinets, there's *only* one laundry basket full of projects to complete, and I'm feeling less overwhelmed by it all.
I do have a bit of a cough that's been hanging around, but if I don't talk *too much* tonight I should be fine. That, and lots of brandy may have to be imbibed "for medicinal purposes". Hah! If I even liked brandy...I'm looking forward to the party, to seeing all the neighbors whom we see so much less once the cold weather hits (we all hibernate in Minnesota, I'm telling you). And now that the decorating is done, the kids will have to find something else to bug us about. As we pulled out of the local nursery's parking lot after buying the tree, George said "I don't think I've ever bought a tree by December 2", and I know he hasn't. His family didn't put up the tree until Christmas Eve. In my family, and for most Minnesotans, anytime after Thanksgiving is fair game. So most years George and I compromise and put up the tree in mid-December, always listening to much pleading from the kids before we get to that point. "When are we going to put up the tree?" "Everyone else already has theirs up!"

So now, this year I can relax for the rest of the month. Yay!

We bought ours yesterday at a place in Stillwater, as we were on our way to guess what, a swapping party. It was awesome, people brought all sorts of things from clothes, food, to yarn and traded all night long.

Have a great party tonight.
Namaste,
Devin

Wow, you really got on top of things. And good on you for keeping it 'less is more'.

Looking forward to hearing how it went. Let's hope your cough didn't bother you too much.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota.
