Bottom Drops Out Of Recycling Market

This is bad news: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081207/ap_on_bi_ge/recycling_bust

The price for recycled materials has just plummeted, making the business of recycling very difficult to maintain. It's time for us to focus more on the REDUCE AND REUSE parts of the mantra than on the RECYCLE part. More trash in the landfills or shipping barges is going to be very ugly...

Although not a good thing, I believe we should always focus on the other two Rs. I think we can become too complacent when we rely on recycling. But we do need the system in place of course.

It's just killing me that I can't recycle glass here. Evidently it's not cost effective to ship the glass to the nearest recycling plant because it is too far away, and glass is heavy and therefore expensive to ship.

On the bright side, Pocatello is instituting curbside mixed recycling, which should increase participation. We're at about 1/10th of the national average now!
