And The Table Groaned

Now I know what the saying means--the table groaned under the weight of the holiday feast. Fortunately, our table is quite sturdy. George made it himself, the legs out of thick slabs of pine and the top of the fir beams of a torn-down old Lutheran church in Wisconsin. He made it over a long weekend in a class at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota.

Here are a couple of photos of the desserts and drinks on the table last night. Along with George's grandmother's handmade tablecloth and my Advent wreath (with three blue candles, one red and another in the center white for Christmas Eve--the proper Lutheran colors), they made a table pretty enough for a picture.

The party was great. We were about 20-plus neighbors in all, going to five houses for our annual (10th for the neighborhood and we've been here for five of them now) Progressive Dinner Christmas Party. I didn't cough too much. Didn't drink or eat too much either, which is a feat--especially the eating part--in itself, but since we were the last house I wanted to be awake for the whole night.

George did all the baking and I did all the cleaning and arranging. We served persimmon pudding with hard sauce, a recipe from my father-in-law from whom we got the persimmons in October when we visited. Let me know if you'd like the recipe. It's amazing and I've missed it since we don't often visit Virginia at Christmas anymore.

We also had russian tea cakes, coconut/white chocolate thingies from the Dec. 2008 Martha Stewart Living magazine, gingerbread cookies and, at the last minute, George made a chocolate Bundt cake when we realized we had nothing chocolate. Oh, and we had vanilla ice cream with the Rumtopf I made (and wrote about in this blog post) last July when I was given a case of cherries at work at the co-op. It was all delicious, if I do say so myself.

And oh, so rich. We are so blessed.

Looks lovely! Wish I lived in your neighborhood. Nothing like an open house to get the dining room repainted and the whole house cleaned, eh?

The table looks lovely, and the food sounds gooood. I would love to try a bundt cake one dauy. I keep hearing it mentioned on American shows. If it's chocolate, then it's alright by me.

Glad for you that the coughing was kept to a minimum.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota.
