Just A Few More, Of The Beach

Indulge me a bit while I post the photos from our day last week at Virginia Beach. This was the kids' first visit to the ocean, because since Grandma and Grandpa have a little beach on their property, in all our visits to Virginia we just have never taken the time to drive the hour south to The Beach. I think they both said "wow" at the exact same time at their first sight of the massive expanse of water and sky and waves lapping at the sand. I could feel the awe as they approached the ocean. What a delight for a parent to introduce their children to something so amazing!Elijah really wanted to get into that water, and it was just warm enough for the kids to put their swimsuits on and get wet. Grandpa thought we were crazy to pack the swimsuits along, but I just knew it might work out. Above you see Elijah trying to "karate block" the incoming waves. He felt powerful! (We had to keep asking him to come back out of the waves a bit.)
Rose did little dances at the water's edge all afternoon...And they built sandcastles...With Daddy's being the fanciest, of course.Grandpa and Grandma and I mainly sat and took it all in.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
