Rearranging the Living Room

Yesterday I was awake at 4 a.m. Today it's 5 a.m. I think my subconscious is waking me so dang early these days because it's the only bit of quiet alone time that I get. And I really like quiet alone time!

It's also a good time to finally clean and re-arrange the living room. Here's a picture.
Just don't look into the dining room next door. I didn't take a picture of that.

How are you feeling about the latest financial news? And the government's latest "big plan" to take over all that lovely debt? Well, if you want a different perspective from the rosy-ish one the mainstream media presents, check out Friday's post at The Automatic Earth.

I don't know who's right. Maybe somewhere in between the positive and the negative we'll find the truth. All I know for sure is I've been reading The Automatic Earth for a year or so now, and they've turned out to be right over and over and over again. Bummer.

I just posted my cynicism on the financial crisis. I'll be honest, I'm a bit nervous but I'm glad I'll be ready for the sh*t to hit the fan.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
