The Debate

Anyone else breathe a sigh of relief that both our main candidates for President can at least SPEAK? It made me realize that three of the past four elections have involved a Bush. OMG can we just be done with them already!

We listened to the debate on NPR since we no longer have cable TV (thankfully we cancelled it last month--and ah, the peace and quiet in our home again!). It was interesting to just hear it and not see any of their mannerisms. I thought they both sounded good, but I was sad to hear Obama on the defensive more often. McCain is the pit bull, though, and we sure don't need any more of that and his warmongering.

I'm still watching carefully to see what happens with the economic bailout. But at this point since I have to choose between the two, I'd definitely rather have Obama leading us through the coming hard times. And yes, I'm not willing to vote third-party at this point and take any chance the Republicans will get in. Sarah Palin being reason number one! Of about 144 million reasons....(just pulled that number out of the air, doesn't mean anything significant)

I watched the debate on our local public television station and was thrilled that NPR and Jim Lehrer were hosting/moderating the debate, since I think they're they only ones that can treat it with class and tact. I think they did, and I think Jim Lehrer did a fine job. HOWEVER, after it was over, one of the commentators said something to the effect of (and I'm paraphrasing big time) "These two candidates were treating this like an actual debate. There was lots of talk about the issues, but really no memorable sound bites, so I'm not sure what viewers at home will take away from this." I. HIT. THE. ROOF. You KNOW we've reached a low point when NPR thinks we can't possibly make an informed decision and must rely on sound bites.

And Lisa, since you listened and didn't watch, there was really only one significant visual element that you missed. Jim Lehrer kept trying to get them to look at one another and talk to each other directly. Obama did that, McCain did not.

It sounds as if we are on the same wave length on the candidates.

Another wavelength here and I so agree with your statement about not wanting to take a chance on a rep getting in. I don't want to take that chance either...

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota. Initially the police told the people on the bus to exit. When the people on the bus asked if they wer...
