Good Radio Program

We are "Sustaining Members" of Minnesota Public Radio. We made the decision to donate monthly to MPR the year that George Bush bought the 2000 election and have been doing so since. I felt strongly then that public radio was the only news source that came even close to presenting balanced, in-depth news, and I still feel the same way. Not that I agree with everything on MPR but I still think it's the best somewhat "mainstream" news around.

George, who'd rather listen to news than watch it on TV or read it online, listens to MPR literally all.day.long when he's home in the summer. So he heard that our friend Louis Johnston, Economics Prof. at St. John's University and the College of St. Benedict's, was going to be on the Midday talk show today. He's one of their resident econ. experts. I got the chance to listen this morning and it was such a good, sane discussion that I decided I'd post a link to it so others can listen.

Here's the link: http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2008/07/29/midday1/

I won't offer much more opinion on the show except that it's reasonable and informational and that Louis does a great job making economics understandable to average people (probably why he's on the radio!). Louis is generally much more optimistic than I am about the state of the world, but hey, he's the expert so we can hope he's right. (Hi Louis!)

I havn't listened to the MPR, but I'm wondering if it sort of balances what (I too read) the Automatic Earth says.

There are a lot of economists who are writing and some of it is pretty darn scrry. Add to it that you wouldn't want to meet most of our politicians in a dark ally - and I include our president in that.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota.
