Almost Ready

This has been one long and somewhat difficult project. If I'd have known how much time (three weeks) and thought (George designed it himself based on these plans which we did not buy and used mostly salvaged materials to build it) and trauma (the bee sting incident I suffered while moving the compost pile from the site) the coop would take, I think I would've skipped the chickens. However, now that the end of building is nigh and its almost time to pick up the hens from my friend Vicki, we're getting excited. We hope the chickens are as much fun as others have said they are! I unknowingly scooped this into the wheelbarrow when I was moving the compost pile. I guess I can see why I got swarmed and stung a few times! That was scary...
The pieces resting in the garage...We certainly have the "Cadillac of chicken coops", eh?
Preparing the site. As luck would have it, someone posted an offer of 20 cinder blocks on our area Freecycle today. We were the first to reply and we said we'd come get them tonight so she was happy to give them to us! What a divine coincidence. We would've needed to go buy patio blocks or something tonight. This saved us a lot of money. George and I are digging them in tonight. They should provide great protection against invading critters and will give the wood something to rest on and prevent wood rot. Yay Freecycle!

Awesome looking coop. Ours also took several weeks to finish and it is great you are using recycled materials. Our coon issues seem to be done for now, but we are dealing with a groundhog who is eating our veggies :(

I can't wait to see what the coop looks like when George is done with it. I hope that we can make it to your place next time we are up in MN. I would love to see how you have your garden set up and then see the coop when it's up ;)

You won't regret it! We've only had our girls for just over a week, and they're so much fun! They really are endless entertainment. And that is SOME coop!

This is awesome.

I am so sorry to hear about the stings. DH came home with a sting from a large black super wasp on his finger. The swelling, heat and redness crept up his arm. Luckily, a couple of helpings of Benedryl put things back to normal.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota. POLICE SEIZE PERMIBUS At approximately 6:25 pm on August 30, 2008 Minneapolis Police, Minnesota State Troopers, Ramsey County Sheriffs, Saint Paul Police, and University of Minnesota Police pulled over the Earth Activist Training Permaculture Demonstration Bus (Permibus) by exit 237 on Interstate 94. Initially the police told the people on the bus to exit. When the people on the bus asked if they wer...
