June is the Happiest Month


The lilacs and irises are blooming.
The strawberries are ripening.
The roses and the peonies are about to bud and open up.
A person feels most in love in June, don't you think?
In love with each other, the air, the earth, the stars, the moon.

I'm so glad we got married in June, as it makes this time of year even more magical. We celebrate not only our anniversary but the longest day of the year, Midsummer Night's Eve and St. John's Day all at the same time.

I'm so glad we have a daughter named Rose, too. Even though she was born in February (the other 'love' month, with Valentine's Day), June is a special time for us too. It's the month of her namesake flower and the month of both of my Grandma's and my favorite Aunt's birthdays. (And BTW, my third grandma was born on Valentine's Day! I just think that's cool.)

Ready for the roller derby, Rose and friends on the first of June.

I was feeling very poetic yesterday, on the first day of June, thinking of these things and relaxing outside in the perfect 75 degree sunny weather. I'm knitting my first pair of socks (well, the first that I'll complete). They're 100% wool, for George, but the color is "Blueberry" so they too are summery enough.

Some iced tea, a homemade-by-George chocolate chip scone, and my knitting out on the back stoop.

I got a tiny little book at the library, Socks & Circs by Dara J. Tatum, and I'm learning how to knit socks on two circular needles. (Sorry I can't find this book anywhere online; it appears my library is the only link to it. It was published in 2003 by Montat Publishing, http://www.montat.com/. There are other books on this, though, like Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles.)

This style of sock knitting is so easy! So, so easy! Anyone could do this...And it's fun, too. I have tried and tried to knit socks the traditional way with 4 double-pointed needles but I'm a nervous wreck with all those pokey needles sticking out. Stitches get dropped, needles get lost, and I just don't enjoy it at all. Well, with two circular needles there's no losing stitches off the end of a needle, there's nothing poking at me, and it's just so much less awkward. But you should wait to see the finished photo of two socks, then we'll know if I actually finished this project. Ooh, now I've dared myself...

I'm so envious. Our first day of June in Texas was upwards of 97-98 degrees. For us it marks the beginning of a four-month spell when you don't go outside unless you just HAVE to. Ahhh, but then again, your June is my January. ;-)

I have to agree that June is the happiest month. I am so much a summer girl and the concept of writine June on my daily notes every day makes me quite happy! I must look up that sock book- I have a terrible case of second sock syndrome right now.

Homeschooling/Unschooling Almost A Year Now

The kids took their annual, required standardized achievement test yesterday. This is the law in Minnesota, homeschoolers have to take the test and keep it in the files at home but we don't have to turn it in to the district or anything, unless there's a problem. It seems reasonable to me. Yesterday's test went well. A friend of mine, a former teacher, does the testing as a business, so the kids are really comfortable with her. She sets up her "office" at the library and devotes about an hour to each kid, using the Peabody Individual Achievement Test . The categories in the Peabody test are General Information (science, social studies, art, etc.); Reading Recognition; Reading Comprehension; Mathematics; Spelling. There are 100 questions per category, though they don't start each child at number 1 but somewhere before/below where they should be at and work up from there. On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
