Happy Father's Day!

The socks! I finished knitting him the socks! For Father's Day...


I hope George had a great day today. He deserves it so much. Daily he impresses me with his "Number One Dad" ways, and I hope he knows how much I appreciate that aspect of him.

Usually he is the one to bake the Sunday morning scones, but last night I said I'd do it. So this morning I forced myself up from my leisure, let him read the paper first for once, and made two batches of scones, one with just chocolate chips and one with fresh raspberries and chocolate chips. As George likes to tell everybody, almost all baked goods around here must have chocolate chips in them if he wants his wife and kids to eat them. And almost always he obliges. I suppose today I could've done something different just for him, but oh well I didn't even think about it...I must admit I didn't really love baking first thing on a Sunday morning, but sacrifices must be made sometimes for those we love.

This afternoon George got to play his flute as a guest with his former band, Ring of Kerry, at an outdoor concert in St. Cloud's beautiful Munsinger Gardens right on the Mississippi River. If that's not heaven for him, I don't know what is. I always feel so proud watching him play, and I love to hear all the compliments he gets after a performance. One neighbor, who was at the concert not knowing George was in the band, came over to us and said "I didn't know you were a rock star!"

And tonight, I'm jealous because his "other girl" gets him. He's sleeping outside in a tent next door to Rose and her friends who wanted to sleep out in the backyard tonight. When they asked if they could do it, I said only if Dad would agree to sleep out in the other tent. Of course, he was totally game for this and after teaching the girls how to put up their tent he put up his own and is out there now reading Harry Potter number 7 and hopefully preparing for a good nights' sleep under the stars of St. Cloud. I'm sure I don't tell George enough what an amazing dad he is, so this is it. Honey, I love you! And thanks for all you do.

And to my dad, and my father-in-law, and to all you dads reading this, thanks! You are loved.

Sounds like a great Fathers Day! A great family and getting to sleep under the stars in Minnesota....who could ask for more??

Homeschooling/Unschooling Almost A Year Now

The kids took their annual, required standardized achievement test yesterday. This is the law in Minnesota, homeschoolers have to take the test and keep it in the files at home but we don't have to turn it in to the district or anything, unless there's a problem. It seems reasonable to me. Yesterday's test went well. A friend of mine, a former teacher, does the testing as a business, so the kids are really comfortable with her. She sets up her "office" at the library and devotes about an hour to each kid, using the Peabody Individual Achievement Test . The categories in the Peabody test are General Information (science, social studies, art, etc.); Reading Recognition; Reading Comprehension; Mathematics; Spelling. There are 100 questions per category, though they don't start each child at number 1 but somewhere before/below where they should be at and work up from there. On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
