Wednesday Night Is Now Homeschool Baseball Night

That's Elijah crouching down to catch the ball.

I had to get new batteries for my camera, which is why I've posted nothing for a few days. For some reason I like to have photos and not just writing on my blog. In fact, this has become more about the pictures for me than the writing. Strange, I used to never take pictures and am more of a writer. It's fun, though, looking for things in daily life rather than just special events to photograph. I know I'll have a better record of our family life because of it.

Here are pictures from last night's homeschool baseball game. The fun started last Wednesday evening and continues through May. It's just the kind of sporting game I like for kids--no pressure, just for fun. A bunch of kids just getting together and playing the game.
Of course, the parents had to drive them there and help with the game, so it's not exactly like when I was growing up and we all just played in the neighborhood. Fortunately, my kids have that too with the neighbor kids, but I don't think a lot of kids do these days. At least, you don't see it in the backyards or parks like you used to. So homeschool baseball fills a need for today's kids--to just get together in a group and play ball!
Both kids had a blast last night, in spite of the fierce wind and cold that drove me to the nearby coffee shop with another mom. :) Mainly the dads help with the game and the moms sit and talk. Hard to talk with the wind whipping across the prairie!

Above is Elijah on third base, waiting to run. The kids don't strike out, everyone gets a turn until they hit, so sometimes it's a long wait. But hey, it's fair and gives all the kids a chance.

Our baseball "league" is organized through the local 200-plus family homeschool group. We're really grateful for the opportunity. And it's free, too!

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
