Peak Oil and Resources

It's been bugging me that in the last post I said "the reason for high gas prices", when I meant to say "one of the reasons..." Of course we know that the value of the dollar has fallen a great deal due to the credit crisis, and that there are temporary supply issues as well as the more permanent one of Peak Oil, and these all cause fluctuations in the market. But I think it's important to know that this trend of lower supply/higher price is very likely not temporary.

Here are some Peak Oil websites:
Energy Bulletin
Life After the Oil Crash
Life After the Oil Crash Breaking News--for scary daily news stories from around the world!
Peak Ready
The Oil Drum
James Howard Kunstler
Sharon Astyk--my favorite writer on Peak Oil and so many other topics
Transition Towns
Transition Culture--the transition towns and culture sites are very positive!

Now, some of these websites will have a panic and "prepare now or die!"-type mentality. I am not advocating that, but I do think we should all be prepared to change our lifestyle quite a bit in the next decade--unless you're rich. We're already seeing people "stuck in the suburbs", unable to afford both food and fuel, etc. SUVs are a liability now for both their makers and drivers. Lots of people are buying bikes. It's already happening.

I see this mostly as a good thing. Perhaps some of us who would rather see less oil/auto use are just thinking wishfully. I don't think so. But it's interesting that right as the climate change tipping point may be being reached, so too is the peak oil tipping point. Maybe there is a God!

Anyway, just thought I'd give you something to read...

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
