Homemade Toothpaste

I wanted to wait until after my dentist appointment last week to post my homemade toothpaste recipe. Since I get a clean bill of health there, I'm ready to tell all what I've been brushing my teeth with since about the last time I went to the dentist six months ago. Here's the recipe, inspired by posts on No Impact Man and Crunchy Chicken and other environmental bloggers trying to avoid the plastic toothpaste tubes, questionable toothpaste ingredients, etc...

3 parts Baking Soda
1 part Salt (sea salt is natural and best for health)

optional:
vegetable glycerine (to make a paste; sweetens and preserves)
3% hydrogen peroxide (just a little bit, to make it liquid-y but not watery; kills germs)
10-20 drops of peppermint or other essential oil

I mix this in a covered honey bowl that has a notch for a little spoon. I just scoop with the spoon and "drip" a bit on my toothbrush.

I really like this stuff, so much that I can hardly stand it when I forget and pull out the tube of toothpaste instead. The Tom's of Maine tastes yucky after the basic baking soda/salt mix!

For the first time at any dental appointment, the hygeniest kept remarking that "you sure don't get much plaque", "you sure don't get much plaque" several times as she still managed to scrape at my teeth for half an hour. (I hate dental cleanings!)

I began to notice that my gums were no longer bloody during brushing shortly after starting to use this homemade stuff. And when I ran out of the homemade once and went back to Tom's for a week, they started bleeding again. So I made up some more mix and it got better, and trust me I still don't floss regularly. Overall, my teeth feel healthier and look cleaner with the baking soda/salt mix. I will not go back. There are other recipes and you can find them online, but most start with the soda and salt. Have fun, try your own version!

I'm excited to try this! I've long been a big fan of Tom's, actually, but I'm nearly out of it, and have all the stuff to do this already!

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
