Beautiful Sunday

Today started gray and chilly, but as soon after the sun came out this afternoon, so did everyone in Minnesota I think! Above is Rose and her friend in the tree "house".
I got the garden staked out into 4 foot wide planting beds with 18 inch wide paths in between. Then I planted about 24 potatoes, just under the hay and on top of the newspapers. If this "Lasagna Gardening" planting method works out, this photo will be the beginning of a success story. If not, it'll give us all an example of what not to do. Let's hope for the first!George staked the pole bean trellis, which in past years has blown and blown and blown over with any bit of wind. This year it's solidly in the ground and ready for us to actually plant something!Elijah worked on his knife sharpening skills and George cleaned out the bird houses so they could be re-hung.We have enjoyed this beautiful day! Tomorrow thunderstorms are in the forecast, and we could really use the rain so we'll be glad for it. Tonight I go to my women's drumming circle, in honor of the full moon and Earth Day. Perhaps I'll post on that tomorrow!

We had a good sunny day, and worked in the garden. Yesterday was better though, 80 and sunny. We did wood, and hung a lot of laundry out!

Nice! We were out in the yard all day Sunday. Today is going to be super warm, so I may try to do some more for peas and potatoes. Nice shots!I love seeing what people are doing with yards for food gardening. :)

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline.
