Vacation Day

George and Rose riding the log ride at the Mall of America

We took a day to "splurge" Sunday and get out of the house. It was the last day of Spring Break and we'd mainly worked all week. So, we went to the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota just an hour and a half from our house. We bought wristbands for the rides in the Park at MOA, window-shopped a little, and ate a really nice lunch at Napa Valley Grille (my favorite restaurant there, but then it may be the only one I've gone to at the MOA since we rarely get there). Oh, and we stopped at the Lindt Truffles shop for a few treats in the mid-afternoon. That store is amazing, wall to wall chocolate.

Rose and George went on the most rides. You can see them above on the water/log ride. They also rode the Ripsaw Roller Coaster countless times. (Actually, Rose tried to keep count and they got up to 9 times on it she says...) I rode it once with her and my comment afterward was, "It was fine, but it wasn't an experience I need to have again", which is a total George-style comment but I was able to use it to my advantage. Besides, George has always loved the roller coasters so he was happy to do most of the riding with her.
All of us rode the bumper cars a few times. Strangely, Elijah decided the roller coasters and things were not for him this time. We were surprised because he's always loved the rides. It has been years since we've been to an amusement park, though, and people change I guess. We all had fun anyway. Eli enjoyed the Lego play area, the food and hanging out reading at Barnes and Noble the best. He's a lot like his mother!

All in all, it felt great to get out of the house and the cold, and allow ourselves some FUN!

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
