Homeschooling

It felt so good this morning to wake up on our own, no cattle prodding of the kids to get out of bed and get ready for school, but "sleeping in" until 7:30. Now we are enjoying breakfast at the kitchen table and soon we'll get dressed and ready for "school" at home.

Above is the fun project I prepared for today. I've cut out of wool felt three sizes of hearts. We'll sew two together and stuff them lightly with fleece. Then we'll string them up to make mobiles. I found this idea in the book pictured, All Year Round. This will be our Valentine's decoration. Rose is always ready to decorate for the holidays!

Also this morning we're going to begin reading The Family Under the Bridge by Natalie Savage Carlson, a Newbery Honor Book which I happened to find for .99 at GoodWill last week. Then we'll do some math which Rose loves and is asking for, then who knows what we'll have time for until lunch time.

Elijah is on his third day of being sick. The same fever and cough the rest of us have had in the last month. He'll be laying on the couch all day, listening to us read but feeling too lousy to participate. Wish him well soon!

At noon Rose will go to school for an hour of Writer's Workshop, half hour of Phy. Ed. and half hour of music with her Daddy. (Dad teaches at the school they've been attending.) Then Dad will bring her home and I'll be off to work for a few hours.

I think I'm going to like this new schedule. And speaking of it, I better get off the computer and get to it!

Blessings on your day! Lisa

We like the All Year Round book - lots of great ideas. Can't wait to see how the mobile looks when it is done! :)

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota. Initially the police told the people on the bus to exit. When the people on the bus asked if they wer...
