Ski club, beautiful day.

Today was a busy day. First church at 10:00, then home for a big brunch (liver sausage, eggs, fried potatos and pancakes--good thing we're skiing today!), a "dessert party" at the neighbors at 1:00, and ski club from 2-4. Now we're home to eat tomato soup and cheesy bread, watch our Sunday night show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and get homework done and instruments practiced.

The Minnesota Youth Ski League is one of the best bargains around, and so much fun for all of us. For $25 per kid for the season, they get to ski in groups according to ability and age, and each group has a coach or two to help them develop their Nordic skiing skills. Meanwhile, the adults can ski along or, as George and I do, ski on our own. It gets us all out in the brisk cold and beautiful snowy woods each Sunday for 8 weeks in January and February. St. Cloud has its own club and we ski at Riverside Park, just a mile from the house.

Of course, the kids have been spoiled by downhill skiing. We have to pretty much drag them to Nordic ski club each week, though they appear to be having fun when we're there. Except at the snack break today. They sat alone and I asked Rose why she didn't go talk to the girls her age. She said, "because, I'm not going to make friends at something I don't like." Unhh! Stab through the heart for Mom.
Oh well, this is one thing George and I feel they need to learn here in Minnesota. Especially since I don't like to downhill ski and cross country is the only kind of skiing we'll ever do as a family. We tell them they'll appreciate us when they're older and can ski both ways very well. I said to Eli, "Some day you'll have a girlfriend who wants to cross country ski together and you'll be glad you can impress her with your skill." He actually didn't scoff at that idea too much and even looked as if he was considering it, my soon-to-be 11-year old boy. Scary!
I did shoot some video of the kids skiing today, and I'll see if I can get that to work later. For now here's some photos of George, Eli, Rose and various ski club friends.
Hope you're enjoying the weather where you are. Lisa

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
