The Barnelopet.

Taylor, Rose, Carter and Elijah before the race. Still wearing the coats and hats, etc.!

Here are some photos from today's ski race. The kids both did the 2.1k in St. Cloud's first ever "Barnelopet". They did great! Rose came in somewhere near the middle of the pack. Eli was closer to the end and we were just so proud of both of them for finishing it. It's a lot of work skiing about a mile as fast as you can! Plus, they both got very warm. It's currently 34 degrees F. here and we were all a bit overdressed for the afternoon. It was nice to be able to stand outside in the sunshine all afternoon though. Cabin fever is gone for the day at least!

Showing off their medals.

There was a bunch of Norwegians at this thing and I told them I didn't know there were so many Norwegians in St. Cloud, even! There was even lots of homemade cookies and bars, just like at church. Of course it was sponsored by the Sons of Norway (and I really didn't know St. Cloud had a chapter). I said to George we may just have to join them. The kids and I certainly qualify by heritage, and they'll probably let him in too. Their brochure says you just need to have an "interest in Nordic culture". I still need my real Norwegian sweater, though. Ahh, maybe next Christmas...(Did you spot George in the background of some of the pictures with his true Norwegian sweater???) It does remind me of my days at Augsburg College.

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
