What a relief!

Still humid today but in the 80s only. What a relief! I believe all our relatives on the East coast are suffering, however, with triple digit temps today. Just wait a day or two, cooler weather, even rain maybe, is coming...

Yesterday I bought two suits at the suit sale at Dress Barn. Why did I try them on? Not meaning to boast, but they looked so great on me! The sales managers said "That suit was made for you" and "You are meant for suits" and all such flattery that I just HAD to buy them. I did turn down a third one, though, which made my husband happy. It wasn't as well made though it was a three-piece--jacket, skirt and pants. Oh well. I like the new suit styles which are curvier and more feminine. They work much better for my body type. Anything boxy and I feel like a man. I am having fun with this stuff!

Also, with the suits I now intend to look for a good part-time job (where I can perhaps wear them regularly). I am at the point where I want it all! I'm going to homeschool the kids part-time in the mornings, send them to school part-time in the afternoons and then hope to find a job and work part-time. Partly I am looking forward to wanting to send Eli to St. John's Prep School for 7th grade, just three years away, and an endeavor that will not be cheap. I figure I better have a good job to pay his tuition.

But also I am ready to do more outside the house. I really enjoy all the volunteer work and neighborhood activism I am doing, but I am finding myself really wanting to get paid for something. I will still volunteer, of course. My neighborhood in particular is near and dear to me and I have too much vision for how it can be made even better. Some things I am currently helping to organize in the 'hood are a neighborhood-wide garage sale in September, a clean-up and lunch in October, and a Home Tour of a few of our lovely historic homes in May.

I am also working on a campaign to urge MnDot to include good pedestrian and bike access on Hwy. 23 when they re-do it in 2009. Hwy. 23 connects my neighborhood and our neighborhood lake, Lake George, to downtown businesses and the new library which will be built just off the hwy. in a year or so. It's a major throughfare but it cuts right through our city and we need to make sure actualy people are not too intimidated to cross it. Actually, the work looks promising and I think the state will make the investments necessary to give us at least some of what we'd like. The City and Mayor are behind us, too. That helps!

But with all this volunteering I have gotten a taste for working with people and getting out of the house. My dream is to find a job in our wonderful downtown, go out to lunch more often (!) and wear my suits at least sometimes! Oh, and to make some money while helping others, enjoying life in the world. I may even just apply at the nice downtown department store, Herbergers, just to be downtown and to be in customer service.

I'll keep you posted!

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

America a Military Police State--Now Obvious to Minnesotans

From my friend Devin's blog, The Quince Urban Homestead . They and others in the Twin Cities are much more aware of what's going on down there than we are an hour north. News reports are incomplete and, of course, skewed to the "need for order" and fear tactics. Of course we don't want violence, but come on! Has it come to this? This could be my family! Or anyone's family, simply doing their thing...Read on...(emphases are mine) Some links first: Youtube Video Twin Cities Daily Planet news with photo Flickr photos Happenings at the RNC here in St.Paul Minnesota. Initially the police told the people on the bus to exit. When the people on the bus asked if they wer...
