The Zahn Zone
Very hot again today. The StarTribune weatherman said that with today's combination of 100 degree temp. and 75% humidity, we are experiencing Calcutta weather. Lovely! I've never even thought of visiting India, Mother Teresa's place notwithstanding. Now I know why!
We took the kids to see Monster House today. (And gosh, even the movie theatre didn't feel as chilly as usual. Air conditioners everywhere are working overtime.) The movie was okay, much scarier than I thought it would be as it is geared to children. George reminded me that it is, after all, a Speilberg movie. I'm not very familiar with his horror films because since having children I can't stand to watch thrillers at all. Which is too bad because I know I'm missing some good ones. I guess kiddie horror doesn't quite get to me like, say, Silence of the Lambs or CSI does, however. Only Rose was truly frightened at times. At one point, when the house first started to attack someone, she was shaking in her seat and wanted to leave. We stayed and she grew accustomed to the fear, however (is that a good thing?). I would not take any child under eight or nine to the movie if I had known the fear factor of it. Unless that child has been exposed to a lot of horror stuff already, which ours certainly have not.
Tomorrow we are going school shoe shopping. George and I were discussing whether or not anyone else would be school shopping already. He didn't think so, but I said, yes, certainly they would be. The ads have been out for a week or two already, and now that I'm a mother of school-aged children (and a teacher husband who's also home all summer), I know exactly why! Because right about a week or two ago, kids were already starting to get bored with summer activities like going to the beach, playing in the sandbox, and riding their bikes. Mothers were already starting to look forward to school starting again. And those back-to-school ads serve as a beacon of hope to us! I am ready to go SPEND SOME MONEY, buy the school stuff, and on those really long summer days, look longingly at it all and pray that the next month goes quickly. Oh yes, those advertisers know exactly what they're doing.
