Day One

Well, here I am with a blog of my own. I'm not sure what I'm doing with this, but I figure 'what the heck', everyone else is doing it, right? Besides, it's totally free! And free is very good.

Day One of the "Zahn Zone". What do you think of the name? "Lisa's Place" was taken, amazingly, so my brain quickly came up with this as an alternative. I like the alliteration at least. Plus, it leaves others in the family free to contribute. Maybe the kids will get into this at some time, which would be great writing practice for them. I'll have to see if I can corral them into it. Maybe Elijah can contribute some poetry like this, which he did last year in his second grade class:

I had a loaf of bread
on my head.
Infact (sic) it
was my
hat
so I
wacked (sic)
it with a
baseball
bat.
the end.

Maybe Rose will dictate some stories. Maybe I'll give you some fascinating political commentary.

Like about how those d***ed self-described "Christians" are now co-opting the Christmas holiday, making it even more commercial than it already was by boycotting businesses that don't say Merry Christmas. Idiots! Do you wonder why I haven't been to church in months? These people are taking Christ out of Christianity so that you can hardly find him or his message there anymore, at least in our mainstream culture. I did enjoy attending St. Cloud State University's Newman Center last Sunday, and in prayer there I realized that I couldn't give up the name Christian for myself just because some "Christians" are turning our faith into a travesty! And thank goodness for Father Kevin, who speaks of God as our Mother-hallelujah! I feel so at home there.

Well, so much for easing into this...I guess you can expect some politics and religion in here. Things usually too sensitive to talk about, but here they fit right into a blog. Until next time...Happy Holidays!

The 7 Areas for Reduction

Today I want to write just a snippet on each of the 7 areas where we're reducing our consumption. See the Riot for Austerity page to learn more. 1. Electricity. No major sacrifices. We're still watching TV a little and I'm online way too much trying to keep up with this group (my latest obsession), but we're now turning both off at the power strip when they're not in use, instead of just at night when we go to bed. Also, many more appliances are getting unplugged when not in use. 2. Heating and Cooking Energy. We are using the a/c today due to temps in the 90s and very high humidity. That is my general rule for a/c use and always has been-it has to be over 90 degrees F. and humid. Tonight when the predicted cold front passes through we'll turn it off for at least the next week of predicted 80s. 3. Gasoline. I'm biking the 2.5 miles to work every time I work, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. George is biking the 3 miles to the health club for his aerobic w...

On Family Meetings and Chores

ON FAMILY MEETINGS: On Friday night we held our first-ever Zahn Family Meeting. I've always felt that families who hold family meetings are so, well, organized and democratic and all that and we've just never gotten around to them (which speaks to my lack of organization, and probably democratic-ness, too). But on Thursday, after "crabbin' out" at the kids for not helping around the house enough, I decided to call a Family Meeting for the following night. I made the announcement to all, including dear husband, that the meeting would take place at exactly 6:30 p.m. after our Previously Scheduled Family Dinner at exactly 6:00 p.m. Just trying to be organized here... I asked the family members to come up with agenda items. Mine, of course, would be the subject of chores. I also said I would give a Treasurer's Report (a.k.a. "why we haven't paid your allowance since Christmas"). So the appointed hour came and the Meeting commenced. I asked for agenda...
